“he’s not healthy but god is he cute”

1. this is EXACTLY the attitude that lets his owners get away with what they do (well that and people not knowing)- seeing that comment was SO disheartening because appreciating the aesthetics of an unhealthy* animal is in a way condoning the practices that led to that animal being a wreck. This is especially true when the animal is a wreck because of human interference and KNOWINGLY bad care practices- it’s not like he’s fucked up because of something congenital, he’s fucked up because his humans’ desire for internet fame outweighs their desire for a healthy lizard. Your attention and admiration is currency, and saying that “well yeah he’s not healthy but he’s cute” or anything like it is the opposite of what that post was trying to accomplish goddammit goddammit goddammit

*unhealthy in this case not referring to things like “an animal with a birth defect” or “an animal with problems from past abuse that’s being taken care of now” because this isn’t a reflection on the animal, it’s a reflection on the shite humans taking care of it. It’s not like with pugs, either- pugs are inherently unhealthy, that’s how the animal is defined. The situation here is taking a healthy animal and making choices that directly lead to health problems. Essentially I don’t think we can appreciate animals in domestic situations without also considering those domestic situations- when you look at a pet, you’re not just looking at an animal, you’re looking at how the humans in that animal’s life make choices for it.

2. are you fucking kidding me he looks like an overboiled hot dog that’s burst its casing because his skin is SO BAD and his jowls are so stretched they look like a distended scrotum and his tail looks like a horse cock (a true fact uttered by an actual equine vet)

👍👍👍 you go kaiju!!
